From Concussion To Unemployment Line For RG3?

September 2, 2015 by Micheal Savoie

Robert Griffin III - RG3
Shortly after declaring he feels like the best quarterback in the NFL, then tweaking that statement, Robert Griffin III sustained an arguably serious injury once again. In what is feeling like deja vu all over again, Redskins fans felt their stomachs drop watching RG3 hit the ground hard in the preseason game against the Detroit Lions. Though it is merely the preseason, is it already time to hit the panic button? (yes)Washington Redskins

The Detroit Lions took the Redskins offensive line for a serious test drive during their preseason game on August 20th, leaving a concussed RG3 in their wake. Though sources are currently claiming the concussion, “isn’t believed to be severe” this was merely the snap that broke the camel’s back. RG3 was tackled a total of 6 times in hits that looked like the Lions meant serious business.

Predominantly allowing those hits were offensive tackle Willie Smith and rookie Brandon Scherff. Willie Smith was in for the inactive Trent Williams alongside what is expected to be the regular season starting lineup. If Redskins training camp is any indication, Smith won’t be the only one stepping in for Williams during the regular season. His performance against the Lions was no vote of confidence in an interesting lineup experiment that directly led to one of RG3’s massive hits.  (Willie Smith was just cut by the Redskins).

Rookie Scherff can boast being the Redskin’s top draft pick but at this point has little else to sing about. His weak pass protection awarded him a move from right tackle to guard in an effort to find the best pocket for Griffin. With Scherff having played both tackle and guard in college, his effectiveness should be just as trustworthy in this position. With his college strengths still on our minds, we aren’t worried yet about his performance. This rookie is still getting his sea-legs with some understandable preseason stumbles.

Kirk Cousins
Griffin looked probable for the next game against the Ravens, but shortly before the game, the Redskins announced that RG3 would not be playing because he was not cleared by an independent neurologist. Monday, the Redskins shocked the media with an announcement that Kirk Cousins would be the starting quarterback for the team week 1.

Judging from the rapid developments of this story, we could be seeing Robert Griffin III playing in a different uniform before this is all over.

Stay tuned!

When You Let A Player Go–Don’t Let Him Play In Your Division!

When the Philadelphia Eagles released Desean Jackson during the offseason, I bet they didn’t think they would have to play him twice a year in their own division. With the Redskins snatching up Jackson and adding him to a very good offense led by Robert Griffin III and coached by offensive mastermind Jay Gruden, you might expect a little payback coming the Eagles way this season.

NFC North Division RivalsThe Chicago Bears are in the middle of a Payback Triangle with defensive end Julius Peppers having been released only to be grabbed by the Green Bay Packers. But that’s not all, folks! The Minnesota Vikings let Jared Allen go in free agency and the Bears made him an offer he couldn’t refuse. So the Bears will be giving Allen a chance to get some payback twice a year against the Vikings while the Packers will be giving Peppers a couple shots at Jay Cutler this season!NFC North Division

Which player playing for the archrival of his former team are you looking forward to seeing play this season?

Black Monday Finds 6 Coaching Openings For NFL Teams

December 30, 2013 by Micheal Savoie

youarefiredOk, the Houston Texans had already relieved Gary Kubiak of his duties a few weeks ago. Before the end of the football games last night, Rob Chudzinski was let go by the Cleveland Browns to get the Black Monday ball rolling. As morning dawned, the word began to spread of Mike Shanahan, Leslie Frazier and Jim Schwartz also getting canned. A little later, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers cut ties with both Head Coach Greg Schiano and General Manager Mark Dominik.

Now, talk is abounding of the possibilities for head coaches for these 6 teams. The best of the coaching opportunities is the Houston Texans, with a star studded defense and offense and the number one draft pick to boot.

Now, I am here to offer my services as Head Coach for one of these 6 teams. Here is what I bring to the table:

  • I am a no-nonsense individual – I don’t put up with bull crap from players and staff.
  • I am able to accept responsibility for my decisions and also get things happening to change those things which are not working.
  • I am results oriented – players who do not perform will be coached to increase their production. If they do not improve after being coached, they will lose playing time and possibly a spot on the roster.
  • I believe in delegation of duties – I am not an expert in any part of the game – but I do have the ability to spot people who are experts.

I would not cost the team much money. I don’t want to bankrupt the team, but I do expect to have a budget for the OC, DC and position coaches. In fact, here is what I would want to get paid:

  • Annual salary of $300,000 per year with a $100,000 bonus for each win during the regular season ($250,000 for playoff each playoff win & $500,000 for a Super Bowl win). Before you laugh… think about how much that frees up for the coaching staff.

I have heard a lot of team ownership say they wanted to go in a different direction. Think about how different this direction would be. Think about how much publicity that would bring to each game and press conference… You are welcome. I am available for interviews over the next couple weeks.
